Trump Says Rising Gas Prices Hurt Republicans in Midterm Elections

President Donald Trump has acknowledged that rising gasoline prices contributed to Republican losses in the 2026 US midterm elections, pointing to the economic consequences of the war with Iran as a factor in voters’ decisions.

Speaking to Fox News after Tuesday’s elections, Trump said he had expected Republicans to perform better despite growing public concerns about the cost of living.

The president’s remarks came as Democrats secured control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate, delivering a major setback to the Republican Party.

Trump, however, maintained that his administration could continue pursuing its priorities and expressed confidence that negotiations with Democrats would eventually be possible.

Gas Prices Become a Political Challenge

The war with Iran has contributed to higher gasoline prices, adding pressure on American households already concerned about everyday expenses.

Trump acknowledged that the increase in fuel costs had likely affected Republican candidates.

His comments reflected one of the central issues of the election campaign: whether voters believed the administration’s economic policies were improving their financial circumstances.

Democrats focused heavily on affordability, criticizing the administration over rising costs and arguing that Republican policies had placed additional financial pressure on families.

Republicans, meanwhile, defended Trump’s broader economic agenda and emphasized their positions on immigration and other domestic issues.

The president told Fox News that he was surprised by the scale of Republican losses, particularly after holding campaign rallies in support of GOP candidates.

Although he recognized the disappointing outcome, Trump rejected the idea that the results represented a personal electoral defeat.

Trump Looks Ahead to Divided Government

With Democrats set to control Congress beginning in January 2027, Trump will face new obstacles in advancing legislation during the final two years of his presidency.

The president has nevertheless signaled that he is willing to negotiate with Democratic lawmakers.

He also emphasized his constitutional authority to veto legislation that he considers unacceptable.

A presidential veto can be overridden only by a two-thirds majority in both chambers of Congress, giving the White House considerable influence even when the opposing party holds congressional majorities.

Trump suggested that disagreements over legislation could eventually encourage negotiations between the two parties.

The president’s acknowledgment of gasoline prices as an electoral factor also highlights the importance of economic conditions in shaping the political debate ahead of the 2028 presidential election.

For Republicans, the challenge will be responding to voters’ concerns about affordability while defending the administration’s record.

For Trump, the election results create a new political environment in which economic policy and relations with Congress are likely to remain central issues.
