Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic is returning to the Swiss Indoors Basel for the first time in 15 years as he continues his pursuit of another major career milestone.
The 24-time Grand Slam champion has accepted a wildcard entry into the ATP 500 tournament in Switzerland. The main draw begins on October 26, with the competition concluding on November 1.
At 39, Djokovic remains one of the biggest names in professional tennis. His return to Basel comes as he seeks valuable ranking points to qualify for the season-ending ATP Finals in Turin.
The Serbian also has an opportunity to win the 103rd singles title of his career.
Djokovic Returns to a Tournament Where He Beat Federer
Djokovic has a successful history at the Swiss Indoors Basel, having competed there three times between 2009 and 2011.
His most memorable appearance came in 2009, when he defeated Swiss tennis legend Roger Federer in the final to claim the championship.
The two met again in the 2010 final, but Federer emerged victorious.
Djokovic returned in 2011 and reached the semifinals before losing to Japan’s Kei Nishikori.
Now, 15 years after his last appearance, the Serbian champion is preparing for another challenge at the indoor hard-court tournament.
His participation was officially announced by the tournament organizers on October 16.
The return has attracted attention because of Djokovic’s remarkable longevity and his continuing ambitions at the highest level of the sport.
ATP Finals Qualification Remains a Major Goal
Djokovic enters the final weeks of the tennis season with 102 ATP singles titles.
Earlier in October, he claimed another China Open championship in Beijing, extending his successful record at the tournament.
The victory demonstrated that the Serbian veteran remains capable of competing for titles against younger opponents.
His next challenge is securing enough points to reach the ATP Finals, where the season’s leading players compete for one of tennis’s most prestigious year-end trophies.
Djokovic has already won the ATP Finals seven times, more than any other male player.
A strong performance in Basel could improve his qualification prospects while bringing him closer to another career title.
The tournament will also offer European tennis fans another opportunity to watch one of the sport’s most successful competitors.
For Serbian communities and tennis followers across the Balkans, Djokovic’s return adds another chapter to a career that has already produced numerous historic achievements.
With the Basel tournament approaching, attention will turn to whether the 39-year-old can add another trophy to his collection and strengthen his chances of competing in Turin.
