Once mocked across the Western world, the iconic Yugoslav car is getting a second chance in the spotlight. British automotive experts Mike Brewer and Marc “Elvis” Priestley traveled to Serbia to restore a 1989 Yugo 55, bringing new attention to a car that remains a symbol of nostalgia for generations across the former Yugoslavia.

One of the most ridiculed cars in automotive history has become the star of a new episode of Discovery’s popular series Wheeler Dealers World Tour. This time, the British team headed to Serbia, purchased a red 1989 Yugo 55 for just €650 and set out to restore the once-famous vehicle to its former glory.

The transformation has now been showcased on Discovery Channel UK’s official Facebook page, alongside photographs documenting the car’s dramatic makeover.

But it was not just the restoration that caught people’s attention. Discovery also shared a message recognizing the special place the Yugo holds in its home country.

“The Yugo is one of the most mocked cars of all time, but not in the country it comes from,” Discovery wrote, accompanying the post with a Serbian flag and a heart.

The message struck a nostalgic chord with many people in Serbia and across the former Yugoslavia, where the little car represents far more than its technical specifications.

For generations of families, the Yugo was their first car, the vehicle they drove to the seaside, took to work or used to learn how to drive. While it became a punchline in many Western countries, at home it remains a recognizable part of everyday life and automotive history.

That contrast between the car’s international reputation and its sentimental value became the central idea behind the British television team’s project.

Bought for Just €650

The stars of the show are Mike Brewer, a well-known British car dealer and television presenter, and Marc “Elvis” Priestley, a mechanic and former Formula 1 team member.

In Wheeler Dealers World Tour, the duo travels internationally in search of interesting older vehicles, restores them and explores whether they can be given a new lease on life.

Their Serbian adventure led them to a red 1989 Yugo 55, which they purchased for just €650. According to Serbian media reports, it was the cheapest car the team had ever bought for the show.

The first encounter with the vehicle brought an unexpected challenge. Milan, the seller, reportedly handed over a screwdriver along with the keys because the trunk could not be opened normally.

Priestley was initially far from enthusiastic about Brewer’s choice. In Britain, the Yugo has long carried a reputation for poor build quality, questionable reliability and outdated engineering.

Brewer, however, had a different vision. He wanted to demonstrate that a properly restored Yugo could hold its own against the Volkswagen Golf of the same era, a model widely regarded as a benchmark in its class.

From a Neglected Car to a Restored Classic

Turning that idea into reality required extensive mechanical and cosmetic work.

The team overhauled the braking system, refurbished the suspension, addressed problems with the steering mechanism and installed a reconditioned carburetor. They also improved the cabin’s sound insulation to make the driving experience more comfortable.

The restoration included a set of alloy wheels and refreshed paintwork, giving the small red hatchback a dramatically different appearance.

In the photographs shared by Discovery, the transformation is immediately apparent. The faded bodywork and ordinary steel wheels have been replaced by a glossy red finish and modern-looking alloy rims.

The result is a more polished and attractive example of a car that many people had written off decades ago. For classic-car enthusiasts, the project also offers a reminder that even vehicles with an unfavorable reputation can attract renewed interest when carefully restored.

The British crew had visited Serbia in June. During their trip, they organized a meeting with local fans near the Avala Tower. Brewer met with supporters of the show while Priestley continued working on the Yugo.

The Car the West Mocked, but Yugoslavia Loved

The Yugo’s international reputation stands in sharp contrast to its place in Serbian and former Yugoslav society.

Produced at the Zastava factory in Kragujevac, Serbia, from 1980 to 2008, the Yugo became one of the most recognizable vehicles of the former Yugoslav automotive industry.

In the mid-1980s, it entered the American market with a starting price of $3,990, making it the cheapest new car available in the United States at the time.

Its low price initially attracted attention, but recurring complaints about quality, reliability and safety quickly damaged its reputation. The vehicle became a frequent target of jokes in American and British popular culture and was often used as an example of what could go wrong when affordability took priority over refinement.

Yet in Serbia and throughout the former Yugoslavia, the Yugo’s significance has never been measured solely by its technical performance.

For many families, it was an affordable introduction to car ownership. It carried parents and children on summer holidays, helped people get to work and became part of countless everyday memories.

That emotional connection explains why Discovery’s message resonated with audiences in the region. The car might have become a symbol of poor engineering in parts of the Western world, but for many people in its homeland, it remains a nostalgic reminder of another era.

When Can Viewers Watch the Episode?

The episode, titled “Serbia: Yugo 55,” is the fourth installment of the third season of Wheeler Dealers World Tour. It premiered in the United Kingdom on October 14, 2026, and runs for approximately 43 minutes.

The episode follows Brewer as he tries to convince a skeptical Priestley that the 1989 Yugo can compete with the Volkswagen Golf of its generation.

According to Serbian media reports, viewers in Serbia will be able to watch the episode on Discovery on November 11 at 9 p.m.

By giving the little red Yugo a starring role, the series has done more than document a restoration. It has revisited a familiar piece of Balkan automotive history and highlighted the difference between a car’s reputation abroad and the memories it carries at home.

For many people who grew up with the Yugo, that is a transformation worth celebrating.
