A viral video sparked outrage after a Florida family said their young son was removed from a children’s soccer league. Police body-camera footage, however, shows a dispute involving the coach’s concerns about the parents’ behavior and the child pushing other players.
A Florida family has drawn widespread attention online after claiming that police were called to a youth soccer field because their 3-year-old son, Nevada, was too talented for the other children.
The incident took place at a soccer field in Winter Park, Florida. The boy’s parents shared an Instagram video showing Nevada dribbling past other young players and scoring goals, followed by footage of police officers at the field.
“They called the police on the 3-year-old ’cause he’s too good,” Nevada’s father says in the video, arguing that the situation began because his son held onto the ball for too long and outplayed the other children.
However, police body-camera footage offers a more complicated account of the dispute.
Coach Says Parents Caused a Disturbance
In the footage, officers explain that they were called after a league official reported a disturbance involving the family.
Speaking with police, the coach acknowledged Nevada’s soccer ability but said the child was more advanced than the other players and sometimes pushed them during the game.
The coach explained that he rotated children in and out of play to give everyone an opportunity to participate. He said Nevada’s parents objected to the substitutions and became confrontational after he asked the referee to address the pushing.
“I just want them out. Immediately,” the coach told officers.
The parents disputed that account, maintaining that their son was being singled out because of his soccer skills.
Nevada’s mother told an officer that she was confused about why her son was being removed from the league, arguing that the family had enrolled him so he could play soccer.
The officer responded that the coach had described the child as very talented but had raised concerns about the parents’ behavior.
After speaking with police, the family agreed to leave the park and withdraw their son from the league.
Police Confirm No Arrests Were Made
According to the Winter Park Police Department’s incident report, officers were requested by a league official who wanted them to speak with the family to prevent further disruption.
Police said the family cooperated with officers and left the location. No arrests were made.
At the end of the body-camera footage, one officer jokingly remarks that he would like to see Nevada play, adding that he bets the boy is good at soccer.
Viral Support and More Than $23,000 Raised
The incident has generated significant attention on social media, with prominent figures expressing support for the young player.
Former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III criticized the situation in an Instagram post, writing: “Punishing a 3 year old child for being too good at a sport is RIDICULOUS.”
Children’s entertainer Ms. Rachel also expressed anger over the incident and called for the boy to receive more opportunities to play, inviting Nevada to appear on her show.
The family has launched a GoFundMe campaign to support Nevada’s soccer journey, explaining that the sport brings him joy and gives him an opportunity to learn and become part of a team. The fundraiser had received more than $23,000 in donations by Tuesday morning, according to the report.
The incident has prompted debate over how youth sports programs should balance a talented young child’s development with fair play, safety and opportunities for every participant.
While the family says Nevada was targeted because of his abilities, the coach’s account and police footage indicate that the dispute also involved concerns about physical play and the parents’ reaction to coaching decisions.
