A network of Serbian-American medical professionals is helping improve maternity care in Serbia through an initiative worth approximately $100,000, providing essential equipment to hospitals in Kruševac, Valjevo and Smederevo.

The Serbian American Medical Association (SAMA), an organization founded in Washington, D.C., has directed its 2026 maternal and newborn health initiative toward regional hospitals serving thousands of families each year.

One of the latest beneficiaries is the General Hospital in Kruševac, which has received two modern delivery beds, two cardiotocography monitors and two newborn scales.

A neonatal resuscitation table is also expected to be delivered as part of the donation, according to the hospital and the association.

New Equipment for Mothers and Newborns in Kruševac

The donation is intended to improve conditions for women giving birth and provide medical staff with equipment used to monitor mothers and babies.

Cardiotocography monitors help healthcare professionals track fetal heart rates and uterine contractions during pregnancy and labor. The planned neonatal resuscitation table will support emergency care for newborns requiring immediate assistance.

According to SAMA, approximately 1,400 to 1,500 babies are born at the Kruševac hospital each year.

The association values the Kruševac project at approximately $35,000.

Hospital representatives welcomed the contribution, emphasizing the importance of modern equipment for maternal and newborn care in regional medical centers.

The initiative also includes the maternity ward at Valjevo Health Center, where SAMA funded 30 new hospital beds, mattresses and bedside furniture in a project valued at $40,000.

Support for the maternity hospital in Smederevo is also part of the program, with equipment delivery planned for January.

Serbian-American Medical Professionals Continue Supporting Healthcare

SAMA was established in Washington, D.C., to connect medical professionals of Serbian origin and support healthcare institutions in Serbia.

According to information presented by the association during the Kruševac donation, its network includes approximately 500 to 600 doctors and maintains contact with a wider community of around 5,000 people.

Over the years, the organization has participated in approximately 80 projects, with total support reaching nearly $1.6 million.

Its work has included improvements to medical facilities and the provision of equipment, with particular attention to primary healthcare, preventive medicine and services for women and children.

The current maternity initiative reflects an effort to strengthen healthcare outside Serbia’s largest cities, where regional hospitals provide essential services to surrounding communities.

Through donations and cooperation with local healthcare professionals, the Serbian-American community continues to maintain a practical connection with its country of origin.
